Choosing a home care provider for someone you love is one of the most important decisions a family makes. The brochures tend to sound the same — “person-centred”, “compassionate”, “trusted”. So how do you actually compare?

These five questions cut through the marketing and surface the things that really matter when the carer is at the door, week in, week out.

1. How consistent will the carer be?

Continuity matters more than almost anything else. Ask: what proportion of your visits will be from the same carer? What happens when your usual carer is unwell or on leave?

2. What training do carers actually receive?

“Fully trained” is a vague phrase. Ask which qualifications are mandatory before a carer is sent to a client, and how often refresher training is delivered. The honest answer should be specific.

3. How are care plans reviewed?

People’s needs change. A good provider reviews care plans on a regular cadence and after every significant change — a hospital stay, a fall, a new diagnosis. Ask how the review process works and who you talk to.

4. What is the complaints process?

If you’re uncomfortable about something, who handles it and how quickly? A confident provider will explain the escalation clearly and without defensiveness.

5. Can I see your CQC inspection report?

CQC inspections are public. A reputable provider will offer the report before you ask — and be ready to talk through it openly, including any “requires improvement” findings and what they did about them.
